Five PD Tips on from Maria De Leon

Parkinson’s is never just Parkinson’s, it permeates every fiber of our being from head to toe and impacts everything around us.

A Parkinson’s diagnosis can shake us to the core especially when given an early age diagnosis. But living with this chronic disease does not mean giving up or stop living. It is possible to live a full abundant life despite our short comings caused by the disease.

Here are a few tips to have a better quality of life and enjoy every relationship and stage of life.

First, we have to embrace it like a favorite relative who has overstayed their welcome remembering that they too can teaches us something about ourselves and about life that can propel us to new adventures and a new unexpected path.

Second, become empowered by learning about the disease, treatments and using our talents, gifts, and interests to make better decisions and bring about change within ourselves and our community.

Third, use your story to heal and help others do the same.

Fourth, stay mentally and physically active learning new languages, new skills and doing your favorite activities like dancing tango, singing, painting, boxing or whatever else brings joy into your life and keeps you moving forward.

Fifth, maintain a healthy diet, sleep and bowel regimen, along with meditation or prayer and at least 3 people to socialize with and keep you accountable.

Finally, maintain a routine in medication intake that is convenient for your own lifestyle and own personal needs. If you keep these concepts in mind you can begin to soar with hope once more after a PD diagnosis.
